VISA Eliminates Cardholder Liability Rule

Effective April 4, 2000, VISA changed the $50 consumer liability rule to $0 and eliminated the 48-hour time frame to report lost or stolen cards.

The new liability policy applies to all consumer card use, including transactions performed on the Internet.
This new rule applies to all STCU VISA card products, including credit, debit, and transactions that take place on the Visa system.

Now — your STCU-issued VISA card is even more appealing! Be watching for ad campaigns designed to boost consumer awareness of the added protection VISA cards now offer.

To Our VISA Card and DEBIT Card Users: Who’s holding onto your balance?

It has become frequent practice for hotels and rental car companies to put a temporary "hold" on a "worst case scenario" portion of your credit or debit card funds. For your own information, why not ask them how much they'll be "holding" until you return the car (or check out of your room) and pay your actual bill.

Example #1: You're renting a car for $39 a day for vacation. You give the rental car company your card number. Immediately, they place a hold on $400 of your available funds.

Example #2: You give your card number to make your hotel reservations for a week. Most likely, the hotel will immediately place a hold on your balance for the full price of a week's stay. (Even if you are planning to pay your bill with traveler's checks at the end of your stay, that amount being "held" on your credit or debit card account will not be available to you until check-out time comes and you pay your actual bill.

Forewarned is forearmed! Be mindful not to overspend on the account on which these funds are "being held."

Member in the News

This issue of Money Doctor is proud to salute credit union member Mary Crow! Mary is an excellent photographer. Last year, she traveled to Italy, taking full advantage of the country's "photo opportunities." Now...(lucky us), a collection of her works entitled "Giro di Italia" (Tour of Italy) is on display through July 31st at Chromatics, 625 Fogg Street., Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 6 pm.

In the past, we've been pleased to display samples of Mary's photography in the STCU office. (Some may remember her "beach" scenes of sand and surf.) Now, we're pleased to have acquired some new ones for our lobby. Next time you're in our office, you can enjoy our smaller, but just as delightful "Giro di Italia."

Way to go Mary! Keep up the excellent work!

Don't Forget Dr. Cash!

Remember, your Dr. Cash ATM machine is located on the first floor of the hospital, across from the Family Waiting Area! Visit him soon! He's ready when you are!
